The Battle beneath the Grey Hills
| Appears in | URC7-I01 Reclaiming Ventnor |
Battle that took place in early 597CY that pitted the forces of the County led by Lord Terard Duncombe and the Duergar army of clan Mithraldeath for the control of the Duergar's Mithral mines.
While Countess Rachel the First led one prong of an attack towards Ventnor castle and Sir Dresham Underley cleared out the Copperwood surrounding the area with another, a third force headed for the Greyhills. It was an elite group lead by Lord Terard Duncombe II, and consisted of some of the County’s most powerful adventurers.
Dividing into small groups, one led by Lord Duncombe himself, they departed the Hillguard complex at dawn and ventured into the hills to separate entrances that the Hillguard dwarves had been watching for weeks. Each entrance was watched by duergar guards and spellcasters. Some groups had an easier time than others bypassing these guardians of the darkness beyond, but eventually, all groups pressed onward.
The duergar proved to be especially devious, leading the groups to dead end rooms filled with traps designed to catch the unwary and the greedy. An adamantine box promised riches, only to prove the trigger of the traps and empty of all but two coppers as well.
Finally, finding the path once again, the groups converged on the city of the Duergar that was now only filled with women and children. Sitting at the center of the city was a black stone building with an entrance carved to represent the open maw of a black dragon. Many thought it odd that these dark dwarves should have such a temple and their astonishment grew when they made there way inside. Sitting in the back of the room between two pools of water, was a stone statue of Tiamat, the goddess of evil dragons.
The battle between the adventurers and the clerics of Tiamat was brutal; however, the forces of good triumphed over the day, slaying not only the clerics, but their rage drake guardians. The temple was utterly destroyed and consecrated to goodness.
After all was said and done, Lord Terard Duncombe II, chose one mighty adventurer from the others to represent him as his shield bearer. Allanon Starblade was honored with the title of Shield Bearer, as well as with being considered a member of House Duncombe and a Thane of the County.
